Custom and conservation framing.

“Custom framing by professionals. Our Museum and Conservation Framing has Won Numerous Framing Competitions.”

Bring the piece in during shop hours and pick the frame and mats at the counter with us. Not sure it is worth framing, or how big it really is? Send a photo first with the form below.

Mike and Lisa Anne: your usual turnaround time goes here (for example, “most frames ready in about X weeks”).

What the words on those labels mean

Cotton ragboard mat
A mat made from cotton rather than wood pulp. It does not yellow with age or stain the art it touches, which is why it is the standard for conservation framing.
Double (or four) mats
Mats stacked with a thin reveal of each one showing. On the Crimson Dazzler that is the red and black line around the cardinal.
Spacer
A thin strip that holds the glass, or a second mat, away from the surface of the piece, so nothing presses on the paper.
Liner and gold lip
An inner frame or edge inside the main moulding. On an oil painting it gives the canvas room to breathe visually before the frame starts.
Walnut burl
A figured wood moulding with the swirled grain you can see on the Brett Smith etchings above.
Shadow box
Depth inside the frame for an object instead of paper. Same idea as the hand tied fly framed under “Summer Fisherman.”

Bring us your piece. Or send a photo of it first.

Tell us what it is, about how big, and snap a picture. We will get back to you with how we would frame it and what it would cost. Nothing is decided until you see it at the counter.

About the framing, from Google

  • “Mike and Lisa Ann are brilliant entrepreneurs and the whole collection is fascinating. The framing is expensive but WORTH EVERY PENNY. If you have something framed at one of the discount places (if you know, you know), you will eventually be bringing it to Up Against the Wall to get it done properly, so you might as well come here first.”

  • “I was completely impressed with the selection of artwork, the framing and knowledge of the staff. I love all of the pieces I have purchased!! Framing and matting are top notch!!!”
